Boca Raton Florida Atlantic Owls

Niagara University's softball team will finally open its 2017 season with a 10-day stay in central Florida. The Florida Atlantic University Owls will play their first game of the season against the BOCA RATON Falcons on Friday, April 14 at 7: 30 p.m. in Boca Raton, Florida.

The game will be the first for the Owls since head coach Lane Kiffin took over as head coach at Ole Miss over the weekend. Spencer has now handed over control of the Owls to Willie Taggart, the Florida State coach who was last fired mid-season and hired earlier this month as his successor at FAU.

On December 21, 2019, the Owls scored their first victory of the season in front of more than 3,000 fans at a sold-out stadium, defeating the SMU Mustangs 31-20. On December 22, 2018, he led them to a 30-14 victory over the Akron Spits, beating them on the road at Akron Stadium.

In just four seasons of existence, the Owls have made the leap from Division A (now FBS) to the Sun Belt Conference and joined the Boca Raton Florida Atlantic Athletic Conference (BOCA RATON) in 2012. The first Shula Bowl was played between FAU and Miami, Florida, for the first time in school history and took place on December 7, 2012 at the University of Florida Stadium in Gainesville, Florida. It is the third bowl game in the program's history and the first since the Bowl Championship Series in 2012. On Saturday, December 22, 2019, when they face arch-rival Florida International, they will record their third consecutive victory in front of a sold-out home crowd at Boca Raton Stadium.

The Owls, only in their 19th year as a football program, have played only two Buckeye State teams in the past. Their natural rival is the Florida International Golden Panthers, who are just 50 miles from the Florida Atlantic and are also competing in Conference USA. In their first two seasons as members of the Sun Belt Conference, they won their league 11-3, but in a surprising 2017, they went 5-7. They were given the # 15 seed list for the national tournament, but fell short of their attempt to upset second-seeded Alabama.

Troy University has long been a rival of FAU, as both schools participated in the Atlantic Sun Conference but have now moved on to the Sun Belt Conference.

The Owls took over football in the 1970s, when they were known as NCAA Division I-AA at FCS level. In 2012, they were 49th in FBS overall offense, with a total of 1,843 yards of offense per game, second-best in America East Conference history.
